Truth be told, you are entitled to 1 free credit report from each of the big 3 credit bureaus each year by law.  Credit scores are another story.  You typically pay for each score you want to recieve.

In addition to knowing you credit score it is important to understand what factors effect it.  reducing your debt to income ratio will positively effect your score.  Paying off your debts will help too.  Too many inquiries into your credit may negatively effect your credit score so be careful when shopping around for loan approvals.

There are many benefits to getting your credit score:

If you know the score, you will know what kind of loan rates to expect in advance
If your score seems to low, you will know to check out your reports for errors
A high credit score is good for your self esteem too
